Once you’ve done all your homework for your vocals, we can talk about the best recording equipment and techniques to use to capture better vocal performance.
Read on and follow these tips to get a better and a clean recording of your vocal performance.
1. Choose the Best Room for Recording
Proper acoustics in the room where you’re recording is the foundation of having a proper vocal recording. A great tip about choosing a room for recording vocals is to choose a room with soft furniture like sofas, thick curtains, carpets, and so on. Wag ka mag record sa rooms with too many bare concrete surfaces or windows.
2. Have the Best Quality Microphone
Syempre, you can’t record your vocals without a microphone and choosing the best quality microphone can determine kung maganda ang recordings mo o hindi. Keep in mind na merong iba’t-ibang klase ng microphones for recording na available naman dito sa Pilipinas.
Depending on the recording song that you’ll record, magandang mag invest sa tatlong uri ng microphones: (1) Cardioid Condenser Microphones, eto ang standard na microphones for recording pretty much anything (2) Omnidirectional Microphones, maganda eto kung may pa-whisper effects ang song mo, and (3) Dynamic Microphones, these are the ideal microphones kung rock genre or may mga pa sigaw ang song that you’ll sing.
3. Be Conscious of the Microphone Placement
Now, if you finally have the best microphone for you that fits your style of singing, habang nag rere-cord ng kanta, dapat maging conscious ka rin sa placement ng microphone. Which means that as you sing, dapat nasa tamang height ang iyong mic.
Karamihan ng recording singers ay pino-posisyon ang mic at their lip level which is good if that’s what you’re aiming for. But you should also experiment with the mic placement because if the mic’s height is below or above your lips, it’ll pick up a different tone galing sa boses mo. Find that sweet spot kung saan effortless na marerecord ang tunog na hinahanap mo.
4. Record Your Vocals Near the Middle of the Room
Related din eto sa entry sa taas na kailangan maging conscious ka sa mic placement to get the best quality recording of your vocal performance. The best placement of the microphone in a room ay hindi sa gitna pero sa area na pinkamalayo sa walls. So between the middle of the room and near the walls.
This is because if you’re recording at the middle of the room there’s going to be a built-up of standing waves na pwede ma pick-up ng microphone. Pag malapit ka naman sa walls, pwede rin ma pick-up ng mic ang mga echos.
5. Invest in Pop Filters
Pop-filters are microphone accessories that prevent “blasting sounds” to be picked up by the microphone. These blasts of air are commonly picked-up in recording kapag nag propronounce tayo ng mga tunog na merong P or B. Pop filters will act as a barrier that prevents the plosives of air galing sa mga P and B sounds na ma record ng mic. It also doubles na harang para hindi lumapit ng sobra ang singer sa microphone habang nagre-record.
6. Avoid Sibilance
Another unnecessary noise to avoid while recording is sibilance. Sibilance can be hear in recordings as high-frequency hissing sounds kapag nag propronouce tayo ng mga S and F sounds. The good news is hindi ganon ka mahal para ma avoid natin ang mga noises na ganito sa recording. All we need is a pencil and a rubber band. Kailangan lang nating itali yun pencil using the rubber band over the diaphragm of the mic. The science behind this is that the pencil will split the high-frequency sound waves at hindi ito ma pi-pick-up sa recording.
7. Invest in a Shockmount
Another noise na pwede nating marinig sa ating recording ay ang mga footsteps natin habang nag rerecord tayo. We may not know it but the mic can pick up the vibrations from our feet and create a noise during vocal recording. If you want to experiment and hear if your footsteps can really be picked up by the mic, walk around the room and listen to the recording. Hear those thumping sounds?
There are several solutions to these kung wala kang shockmount, pwede kang umupo habang kumakanta or maglagay ng rubber pad. Rubber pad are fastened at the foot of the mic and hinihiwalay nito ang acoustic vibrations na nanggagaling sa floor, makakatulong din ang carpet to lessen noises from your footsteps.
8. Always Use Closed-back Headphones while Recording
Similar to the microphone, you need to invest in high quality closed-back headphones para magkaroon ng magandang quality vocal recording. This helps you to accurately hear yourself while you sing pero hindi maglalabas ang mga sounds galing sa headphones na pwedeng i-pick-up ng mic. As opposed to using regular headphones without it being a closed-back one, pwede mag bleed out ang sounds na nirerecord mo from the headphones at ma pickup sa recording.
9. Control Your Proximity to the Microphone as You Sing and Breath
Last but not least, kailangan ng mga singers na maging conscious sa mic distance habang kumakanta. You can’t move around and depending on the mic, you need to be a couple more inches farther aways or shorter. Condenser Microphones typically require 6 – 10 inches of distance while recording, while Dynamic Microphones ay hindi kailangan ng ganun kalayong distansya.
But regardless of what type of microphone ang ginagamit mo, you need to be aware of your proximity. The general rule is maintain the size, kapag lumaki malakas ang volume ng boses mo, you need to move farther from the mic and closer kapag lumiit ang voice mo. And as you breath while you’re singing, it’s recommended to turn your mouth to the side, para hindi ma pick-up ang inhales and exhales ng microphone otherwise, marami ka i-edit sa mixing stage mo.
Hanggang dito nalang muna kapatid at sa susunod an muli!
